Some of the promises you may have heard are, “lose 10 pounds in a week” “how to lose weight fast” “shed your body fat in 10 days” If you have tried to lose weight, these kinds of diets can be very tempting… But caution the buyer! There’s no magic pill, or no special food combination that’s going to make you lose weight. Most of these fad diets are, in fact, not worth trying at all.
Unfortunately, the truth is, many of us have followed these fad diets and these types of diets can do more harm than good to your health. Most of these fad diets do not work in the long term to help you lose weight and keep the weight off. Furthermore, with EXTRA pounds, the weight most lose initially is put back in. With this being said, we all need to come to an understanding of how our bodies work with regard to dieting to fully understand how to lose weight and keep it off. It’s important for us to mention briefly the importance of knowing your numbers. Know your ideal weight, blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol levels, etc., for example. Moreover, many fad diets limit the amount of calories and nutrients that you consume, which can lead to deprivation of energy and severe nutritional deficiencies.
You can also end up disrupting your natural metabolism, because most fad diets require you to eat a structured amount of food on a structured schedule. Your metabolism is the rate at which calories are burned in your body. The body, in its normal state, called homeostasis, learns after a period of time to maintain the weight you normally carry. If you lose weight too quickly, you probably lose lean tissue/muscle mass. Our metabolisms slow down as we lose muscles. Once you reduce calorie intake dramatically, your body begins to adjust to less food and, based on the lower calorie count, a new homeostasis is created. Your body learns to operate normally with less, which means that you will gain much more weight than before when you start eating regular food again because your body is used to surviving on fewer calories. With a healthy diet of all types of foods, losing weight slowly will keep your metabolism working correctly.
Another negative effect of fad diets is muscle loss, as previously mentioned. Your body looks for other ways to get energy since your diet is very low in calories. Digesting your muscles is one of these ways. This is actually detrimental to weight loss because, even when you are at rest, muscles help you burn more calories.
Fad diets are fast fixes, not permanent solutions to the problem of weight. You may initially lose weight, but you get the weight back as soon as you start eating regular food again. Your eating habits and lack of activity are the problem. Your weight will continue to go up and down until you start to eat healthier and exercise regularly.
So what’s the answer to achieving your objective of weight loss?
The answer is a balanced eating plan that, combined with moderate physical activity, includes proper nutrients. Weight loss is as straightforward as it is difficult. Weight gain or loss can not be caused by any particular food or product. The only way to lose weight is to change your habits over a period of time and consistently eat fewer calories and exercise more. You need to consume fewer calories than you burn in order to lose weight. Eat a balanced diet rich in all food groups; instead of focusing on what not to eat, concentrate on what to eat. Increase your level of activity by doing moderate daily exercise and you will feel emotionally, mentally, and physically better. It’s so straightforward, but few of us are able to do it, although doing so will change your life.
